Connor Cummins is a 15-year-old Schoolboy from Ramsey in the Isle of Man who is about to embark on a Road Racing Career. Success has been achieved already on two wheels, in the local Moto Cross scene, but with a Father and Uncle already Road Racing, the lure of the tarmac has proved too much for him.

We spoke to the laid back schoolboy from his Ramsey home where he lives with his parents, and asked him to share his thoughts regarding his future in Road Racing.

Connor, first of all how long have you been riding Moto Cross?

Since 1990 about I think.

And what have been your greatest achievements to date in that area of the sport?

I’ve won a couple of Automatic and 60cc local Championships.

But where you adamant, that you were going to try Road Racing at some stage?

Yes definitely. I only really rode in Moto Cross to get a feel for riding bikes fast and to keep me fit. I’ll carry on throughout the winter but then we’ll sell the bike to help pay for the Road Racing.

And how much of that was your father’s influence?

Quite a lot. My Dad has raced for year’s so I’ve always been around the racing tracks and the interest has come from there I suppose.

So I think I’m right in saying that you started Road Racing this year, taking in the Race School at Jurby first of all.

Yeah that’s right, I did it about four times and it helped for sure.

And then you went on to race in the UK a couple of times? Tell us all about that?

I went to Aintree twice and Three Sisters once. I won the Junior Race at Three Sisters but I had mechanical trouble both times at Aintree but I was getting up to the front.

So this year will be your first full season, what meetings are you planning to take in at this stage?

I think we’re going to do as many of the meetings at Jurby as we can but we’ll be going over to Aintree and Three Sisters and places like that every couple of weekends and if all goes well we’re going to Donnington to race in March.

And have you given up Moto Cross completely now?

Yeah I think so, but if the Road Racing thing doesn’t work I’ll maybe go back and I might try and do it in the winter each year to keep fit if I can.

What machinery will you be riding this season then Connor?

Well I’ve got two 125 Honda’s from Rodger Owen. Ones a ’93 and the others an ex-Mick Chatterton 96 version plus we hope to buy one of our own if we can.

Do you have aspirations to go and race on the Pure Road Races at any stage in the future?

I don’t really know. I can’t see past the short circuits at the moment but I wouldn’t mind riding in the ‘Manx’ and maybe doing a few Irish Road Races like Skerries. We’ll just see what happens.

It must be helpful to have your dad and uncle both involved in the sport as riders, with experiences to share?

Definitely. They’ll be helping me out all the time of course and I’ll have Andy Broughton working on the engines for me as well

Well it’s great talking with you, and from what I’ve seen of you at Jurby, I’m sure you will do very well. Good luck for the season and make sure you keep us up to date with your progress. I’m sure lots of people will be looking out for you?

Cheers I will.
